The department of Electronic Science was formally established as separate department from June 1994. Earlier it was a part of Physics department. Modern college was the first among few colleges in Pune University to start Electronic Science as a separate discipline in 1985, when University introduced this subject. It now runs Junior, Senior, Post Graduate courses and diploma courses of Yashawantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University Nashik. The department also shoulders the responsibility of teaching to Bachelor of Science in computer (B.Sc. computer science) students (A Non-grant course). Our teachers are contributing to teaching computer Science course for MCS as well. As the subject is a recent most of the staff members of the department are quite young and ready to learn new topics and recent advances in the subject. It is the only department to start Agrielectronics and Automotive Electronics as an optional course at UG and PG. This gives us opportunity to interact with other departments like Statistics, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Mathematics. The department runs its own library and the work is shared by our staff members and laboratory assistants. The Books, periodicals are borrowed from main library and teachers donate some of them. To improve skills in English communications teachers donate some popular magazines and they are kept for easy circulation.
           
The teachers are keen to give new projects topics to B,Sc. And M.Sc. students. In the process we try to establish links with industries and academic institutions like GMRT, Vijayesh instruments, Lytex Ltd, DRDO, NCL, Pune University etc). As we have a common laboratory for B.Sc and B.Sc. computer science students we have a good number of equipment such as CRO, Signal generators, Power Supplies etc. Our teachers have developed some of these. This helps in two ways 1) Cost effective and 2) Easy to maintain. The department has organized seminars on Syllabi revision for B.Sc. computer science electronics and for promotion of basic sciences. Workshop on career  after B.Sc. and to set the practical examination question papers for B.Sc. computer science course were also organized. Also Hands on training programs for PLC , ARM processor were organized.  Also Personal development workshop was organized with the help of PICT (Dr. Nikam). Our students participate in different workshops and seminars like NSPTS, Agrielectronics, Fiber Optics, DSP, Microelectronics, Micro controllers etc. The budget for department comes under various heads Junior, Senior, B.Sc. computer science, M.Sc., YCMOU, Vocational Course (Computer maintenance) introduced in 1999. The equipment grant for vocational subject and collection from YCMOU fees have contributed efficiency to provide infra structure and equipment facilities in the department.
 
Department organized two day workshop on syllabus revision for S.Y.B.Sc.(Computer Sc.) – for Embedded System and DSP  on 7-8 December 2009. and  also one day workshop on syllabus revision for T.Y.B.Sc.(Electronic  Sc.) – for Digital electronics, Consumer Electronics. and Instrumentation on 8th Dec. 2009. On 5th December 2009 , Prof B B Yenage received Outstanding performance award from NCC Group  Head Quarter Pune.
